🚀 Top 5 EdTech trends for 2023.

Plus the ones that didn't quite make it.

Good morning 🌤️ Welcome to The EdTech Lab Review, the newsletter that takes a look at the latest in technology and turns it into digestible content for educators and academics.

Today, we are dishing out the top EdTech trends we’ll continue to see for 2023.

1. Adapting to Artificial Intelligence

While the concept of artificial intelligence has been around for at least 50 years, the recent explosion of generative AI tools like DALL-E and ChatGPT has catapulted it back into headlines and into classrooms.

Proactive schools will be challenged to adopt AI tech in the same way that lessons had to be adjusted with the invention of the calculator. We’re eager to see the many ways students and teachers will benefit from this.

2. Making up for "learning loss"

Several analyses have looked at the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning, with some showing that students may have lost the equivalent of half a year of learning during this time.

Personalized learning experiences will be critical in helping those that are affected the most. Schools will prioritize technology that focus on academic outcome as well as social and emotional learning.

3. Shift from "online-only" to "hybrid-first"

The days of remote learning are slowly coming to an end (for most). Because of this, classrooms and curriculum will be built to allow both online and in-person participation. Integration of both synchronous and asynchronous learning will be leveraged. Thanks to emerging technologies, these will be more accessible than ever. Speaking of emerging tech…

4. Meet me in the Metaverse

Last December, the Museum of Science Boston, in partnership with popular game platform Roblox, created its first immersive educational experience called “Mission: Mars”. More recently, Dreamscape Learn, a VR company that's developed in collaboration with Arizona State University, raised $20M in funding.

Extended Realities (XR) and immersive technologies help provide the hybrid-first environment as well as continue to deliver experiences that are otherwise inaccessible to some.

5. Re-skilling and Upskilling platforms

Finally, keeping up with new technologies combined with the current market conditions will leave many yearning for more knowledge and skill building. For adult learners, the reliance of re-skilling and up-skilling platforms will continue to grow.

BONUS: While we don’t think the following will be making waves like the previous five, they are worth keeping an eye on:

That's all, folks. Remember: let's make education smarter with technology.
